- The Commission on Youth (COY) is a Salt Lake County Mayor appointed coalition of community youth advocates. The purpose of the Commission is to study youth needs and issues and make recommendations for policy decisions to the Salt Lake County Mayor. Educators, administrators, parents and students from each of the four school districts in Salt Lake County, as well as community business representatives, social service, law enforcement and legal providers make up the diverse body of COY.
Functions and Duties
- Consider, debate and decide issues in the interest of youth
- Advise the Mayor of all youth related problems and programs in Salt Lake County
- Identify areas in which state youth legislation is needed and assist in the development of such proposals
- Lobby for the passage on a County/State level for such legislation
- Negotiate with community and public groups in the interest of youth
- Assist in the development of mechanisms that will educate the public about youth problems and the alternative solutions the county offers
- Educate organizations they represent and other youth related groups to insure they will be continuously informed about the goals, programs and philosophy of the Commission on Youth
- Assume responsibility for good public relations
- Identify County youth problems and refer them to the appropriate planning staff for study
- Receive recommendations for youth plans from professional youth planning committees, youth service providers, and other organizations
